PANJIM: After eight dead free days, Goa's tryst with road deaths kick-started again with a grim reminder of Goa's death average  of one death every 48 hours

In two tragic accidents, two elderly women were killed on fatal Friday, in Panjim and Porvorim, coincidentally at the same time. These are the first two fatal accidents to occur in the month of February 2024, in the continuing trail of deaths on Goan roads.

In the first accident which occurred at the Panjim bus stand, a 68-year-old woman was tragically crushed under the front left wheel of a private bus, leading to her immediate demise. The incident occurred at the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) bus terminus as the bus was leaving the bus stand.

Panjim Police stated that the deceased, Santana Almeida, hailed  from Neura. The accident occurred at 9.15 am. The driver Prashant Sawant of Aldona has been booked under Section 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).  Further investigation is on under PSI Amit Taral. 

The second tragedy occurred at Porvorim, opposite Mall de Goa, on Friday. In the collision which occurred between a truck  and a scooter, on which a senior citizen couple from Goa Velha were riding, the wife who was riding pillion died on the spot, while the man is seriously injured and was shifted to hospital. 

The victim was identified as Mary D’Souza, 67. Her husband Jerome D’Souza is recuperating in hospital.

Both incidents took place in the morning, prompting immediate responses from local commuters and law enforcement authorities.  Investigations by Panjim and Porvorim police are currently underway to determine the causes of the accidents.
