VASCO: The chicken and mutton vendors who have allotted spaces in the market have demanded that the Mormugao Municipal Council should remove all the chicken and mutton stalls operating illegally and in unhygienic manner in its jurisdiction.

One of the vendors Macroy Valadares on Thursday said that both, the chicken and mutton vendors operating in the municipal market are facing various problems including the illegal vendors operating at various places and affecting their business.

Valadares said that due the illegal vendors, they were losing business as customers do not visit the market. He alleged that these vendors slaughter animals in the open and in most unhygienic conditions. He demanded that the municipality should initiate action against all such vendors as they were operating illegally and without obtaining required licences from the municipality and the Directorate of Health Services.

Vendor Mohammed Iqbal said that they have been operating in the municipal market by paying all the taxes such as rent and sopo but the illegal operators were affecting their business. He pointed out that some chicken vendors were illegally operating in the vegetable market and demanded immediate action against them also.

Another vendor Dastagir said that they were operating in the market by adhering to all the rules and regulations and maintaining hygiene and demanded action against the illegal chicken and mutton stalls. “We pay for water connection, take due care of disposing chicken and mutton waste and also pay sewerage charges. But due to illegal stalls we are incurring losses,” he said.
