NCP assures support, says will fight MPT expansion move
VASCO: Assuring full support to the people opposing proposed expansions of three different projects at Mormugao Port, the Goa state Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Jose Philip D’Souza on Monday said in any circumstances NCP will not allow MPT to go ahead with its proposed expansions and even if the outcome of the public hearing for proposed expansions projects goes in favour of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), the NCP is geared up to approach court against proposed expansions projects at MPT.

VASCO: Assuring full support to the people opposing proposed expansions of three different projects at Mormugao Port, the Goa state Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Jose Philip D’Souza on Monday said in any circumstances NCP will not allow MPT to go ahead with its proposed expansions and even if the outcome of the public hearing for proposed expansions projects goes in favour of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), the NCP is geared up to approach court against proposed expansions projects at MPT.
Addressing the press in Vasco, D’Souza slammed MPT for fooling people of port town by giving false assurance that movement of trucks from MPT would take place during night as even during day time city roads gets chock up with heavy vehicle traffic.
He reiterated that by handling dirty cargo like Coal and woodchips, MPT has been polluting environment in the port town and other neighbouring areas and therefore MPT should completely stop handling of dirty cargo and should rather handle non-polluting cargo like rice, wheat, sugar etc.
“Today whole of Vasco and specially people of Khariwado have been suffering from dust pollution created while handling coal and woodchips at different berths and instead of controlling pollution, MPT has started giving false assurance that vehicles from the port area will ply only during the day. Also we don’t understand why MPT wants to handle such dirty cargo against the wishes of people,” D’Souza said.
