PANJIM: With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), the State government has agreed to have 1,200 instructional hours per year and five-and-half hours per day for teachers.
Secretary (Education) Prasad Lolayekar on Thursday held a meeting with the association of different subject teachers of secondary schools at Porvorim.
The teachers were briefed about the implementation of NEP-2020 for the academic year 2024-25. The teachers brought to the notice of the Secretary that as per National Curriculum Framework (NCF), the teachers had 29 hours of instruction per week and five and hours per day. They pointed out that teachers are already working for almost 33 hours per week.
During the meeting, it was also brought to the notice of the Secretary that more weightage is being given to languages and suggested to increase the time for mathematics.
They also discussed the issue of Physical Education (PE) teachers, who most of the time had to wait till evening hours in the school.
Later, Secretary (Education) Prasad Lolayekar said that schools have been given the liberty to customise their time-tables in view of implementation of the NEP. He added that the Directorate of Education had held meeting with the teacher’s association regarding implementation of NEP and asserted that there is no opposition for NEP implementation from any quarters.
“We have addressed all the concerns raised by the teachers. All associations are on board and nobody has a problem with the implementation of NEP. They may have some concerns as it happens when any new policy is introduced and we have given them free hand to decide on the time table. We have given a model time table but that does not mean that everybody has to follow it as ground reality may be different for each school. We have instructed all the high schools to frame time table as per their convenience and get it approved from the Director of Education,” he said.
