PANJIM: As the number of Indians on board the coronavirus-hit cruise ship Diamond Princess increases every passing day, Commissioner for NRI Affairs (Goa) Narendra Sawaikar has approached the Embassy of India in Tokyo seeking status of the health of Goans stranded on the ship.

“The families of the Goan seafarers are extremely worried and anxious to know about the well being of their family members who are onboard the cruise ship.  In view of the above, the NRI Commission, Government of Goa would be highly obliged, if the Embassy of India would kindly appraise us on the current status of the Goan seafarers onboard the ship.  The assistance from your office would be highly appreciated and this would enable us to inform the concerned family members accordingly,” Sawaikar said in a letter to the Ambassador of India, Embassy of India, Tokyo, on Monday.

The total number of Indians infected with the virus has reached 14 till Monday even as the Embassy conceded; it hoped no additional Indian nationals onboard the cruise liner would test positive for coronavirus.

Around 50 Goans are among 138 Indians on board the ship. More than 3,000 crew members and passengers have been on the ship when it was docked off the coast of Yokohama due to the virus scare last month.
