MARGAO: The Navelim panchayat convened a special meeting with dairy farmers and officials of the Animal Husbandry Department to find solutions to the stray cattle menace.

The cattle owners were informed that if their cattle are found wandering on the roads or resting on the roadsides, they would be liable to pay a fine up to Rs 5,000.

They were also informed that the impounded cattle can only be released based on an order from the magistrate and that unclaimed cattle would be auctioned off.

It was also decided that the Navelim and Telaulim panchayats would work together to identify land for a cattle pound. The officials also informed the famers that merely tagging their cattle does not absolve them of their responsibility, as cattle wandering without a herdsman would be labelled as strays.
