Neurosurgery unit at GMC to be strengthened

PANJIM: With two MLAs amongst those suffering a brain stroke in the State, Goa Medical College (GMC) and hospital has decided to strengthen its neurosurgery unit to provide efficient services for such emergencies.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday held a review meeting with GMC Dean Dr Pradip Naik, Medical Superintendent Dr S Bandekar and Heads of Department, where it was decided to improve and strengthen GMC’s neurology unit. 

Speaking to media persons, Rane said, “We have decided to have two dedicated operational theaters (OT) and one minor OT for neurosurgery.”

He said that on lines of the cardiac unit, GMC is working towards having a specialised stroke unit to deal with emergencies. “For that, there is need to provide exposure to our doctors, especially to train them in new technology and modern method of treatment. My aim is to strengthen stroke unit in GMC as cases of stroke are on the rise in Goa,” he said.

He added that Dr Teresa Pereira, the head of department of neurology, will be sent to America for a month-long training.

Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar who suffered a stroke is currently admitted in Mumbai, while another BJP MLA Carlos Almeida suffered a stroke, few months ago.

During the review meeting, it was also decided to identify a new operation theatre for the orthopedic department.

Rane said it has been decided to blacklist companies that fail to supply medicines within the time stipulated in the tender. Also, GMC will seek for mandatory performance guarantee from companies that will bid henceforth.
