PANJIM: Uday Madkaikar, the newly elected Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, has stated that he would play on the front foot and work aggressively to resolve the city’s issues.

Madkaikar was elected unopposed as the Mayor of CCP and Pascoela Mascarenhas was elected unopposed as the Deputy Mayor in the election process held on Thursday.

In the corporation of 30 corporators, Atanasio Babush Monserratte backed panel has 15 corporators, while the BJP backed panel has 13 corporators and former mayor Surendra Furtado and his wife Ruth Furtado are unattached. The BJP which had announced on Wednesday that it will not field a candidate for the elections, hence, boycotted the election process on Thursday.

Speaking to media after taking over the charge, Madkaikar said, “People have elected us to work for them. No doubt the Commissioner holds the powers, but as people’s representatives we too have powers and responsibilities to work for the people. I will work on the front foot and will put in all my efforts to struggle for the people of Panjim.”

To a question on the BJP backed panel boycotting the election process, he said, “I’m not aware why the other panel boycotted today’s election process. They had already announced that they would not contest and therefore there was no question or reason to boycott the election. All 30 corporators are responsible for the works in their respective wards and I assure support to all the corporators irrespective of their affiliations.”
