MARGAO: The newly elected committee of Margao New Market Traders Association, Margao expressed their anger over the illegal business operations happening in the commercial town and assured that their first priority will be safety of the traders and the customers entering the market for shopping.
Addressing the reporters, Gopal Naik, newly elected President of the committee, said that the lives of the traders and customers visiting the market is in danger due to lack of fire safety measures.
Naik said that the committee members will take law into their hands if the police and civic authorities failed to initiate action against the illegal business operators and the stock suppliers blocking the roads in and around the market. “We have set our priorities and the recent fire incident in the market forced us to take concrete steps pertaining to the safety of the traders and the customer from such types of fire incidents,” he said.
He further said that the concerned authorities should expedite the process of erecting a water tank at the pick-up stand immediately.
Naik said that they have already urged the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to start repairs works of the market and complete the same before monsoon season.
“As discussed with local MLA Digambar Kamat and the MMC, the market roof will be replaced, besides the works of illumination inside the market complex and repairs of all entry gates will be carried out in the coming days, for which the civic body has already agreed,” he informed. He said that illegal business activities such as businesses on footpaths and roadside including regular exhibitions of goods is badly affecting their business.
