PANJIM: The Panchayat and Comunidade of Saligao on Wednesday decided not to issue a NOC to the proposed Saligao night market in the village.
On Tuesday, a 15-member delegation comprising three Saligao panch members, attorney of the Saligao Comunidade and others had met Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaoncar.
“The problem was discussed with everyone present, including the MLA, Sarpanch, panchas, comunidade attorney and villagers agreeing that Saligao does not need a night market. Everyone agreed on the dangers and problems that this night market will bring in,” said delegation members.
“I don’t endorse night markets that will kill the peaceful village life. My dream is to recognise Saligao as a heritage village. I am for a market which will encourage agricultural produce and artisan’s self-help groups. I want a designated and a dedicated market for fish, for vegetable,” Salgaoncar said.
Villagers pointed out how such night markets, being tourist attractions, destroy villages in ways that cannot be repaired.
The Panchayat and Comunidade are also working on a day market for Saligao agricultural produce and other village products, as well as a food court that will house all the illegal gaddas that are mushrooming in the village.
