PANJIM: The State government on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness for the forthcoming Zilla Panchayat (ZP) polls, which could be held in December or January 2021. The ZP polls, originally scheduled for March, were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

State Election Secretary Melwyn Vaz said the ZP elections in the State can be held in December or January. He said the Bihar elections have become a benchmark for how the elections need to be conducted with precautions.

“We are yet to have consultations with the government on the exact dates but most probably it could be held in December or January,” Vaz said.

He said that on Tuesday a meeting was called with the North and South Collector and SPs which discussed basic preparedness.

“Everything is in place like ballot papers have been printed; staff has been extensively trained etc. However, there could be need of additional staff due to implementation of strict guidelines,” he said.

Vaz said the decision on exact dates will come from the government in consultation with the Election Commission.
