Joshua gets ticket in Mapusa, while Sopte, Shirodkar will contest in Mandrem, Shiroda; Naik and Sawaikar are LS candidates

PANJIM: As expected, Bharatiya Janata Party has cleared Joshua D’Souza, son of former Deputy CM Francis D’Souza, as the candidate for the Mapusa by-poll to be held on April 23.

In the list of candidates announced, BJP sprung no surprises in Mandrem and Shiroda Assembly constituencies when they cleared the candidature of Dayanand Sopte and Subhash Shirodkar respectively.

For the parliamentary constituencies, BJP will retain Ayush Minister and North Goa MP Shripad Naik as the candidate for fifth consecutive term. Similarly, BJP has named Narendra Sawaikar as South Goa candidate.

The supporters and well wishers of late Francis D’Souza were upbeat after BJP announced Joshua as the candidate for Mapusa. This announcement was much awaited as Joshua was pitted against Mapusa Municipal Council Chairman Sudhir Kandolkar for BJP ticket.

What increased the probability of Joshua getting the ticket was the support that he enjoyed from Goa Forward Party. GFP president Vijai Sardesai had publicly announced that he supports Joshua to “take ahead the legacy of Francis D’Souza”.

Soon after the announcement Sardesai tweeted, “Congratulations #Joshua! And thank you @AmitShah @BJP4Goa @DrPramodSawant @TendulkarBJP for endorsing my strong belief that he’s the ideal person to take the glorious legacy of his father, former DyCM Francis D’Souza forward, by nominating him as your candidate for #Mapusa,” Sardesai tweeted.
