CURCHOREM: The first rain in June disrupted normal life in Curchorem early Thursday morning accompanied by strong winds, rain, lightning and thunder. At many areas of Curchorem received heavy rain resulting in flooding of the roads, falling of trees and power failure in many places.

Since the work of the first phase of laying pipelines for Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was carried out in Curchorem just recently, the roads were caved at many places, especially at the manhole (chamber) of the pipeline. As the mud is dumped near the SAG cricket ground, Curchorem, the flow

of water to the drain was blocked leading to flooding of the ground.

According to Fire and Emergency Services, they received around 18 calls of various incidents which were all attended to by Thursday evening. "Trees which fell on two houses at Curchorem causing a loss of around Rs 20,000 and those which fell on the roads

were cleared by evening," said the official.

The Curchorem Executive Engineer Subhash Dessai said that around 10 electrical poles were damaged causing a loss of around Rs 3 lakh. "One DP transformer is damaged at Mollem and around Rs 8 to 10 lakh are required to replace it with a new one," Dessai informed. He said that all the major power supply was restored bearing a few individual connections which the linesmen were working on till late evening.
