Advanced diagnostic tool to provide real-time and lab quality medical results within minutes launched; Goa first State to use state-of-the-art machine in public health sector

PANJIM: The State government on Tuesday launched an advanced handheld diagnostic tool “i-STAT” that would provide real-time and lab quality medical results within minutes.

The government entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Colorcon pharmaceutical company that sponsored 10 machines with cartridges – worth Rs 80 lakh – from manufacturing company Abbott to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC).

The machines can provide results of 29 diagnostic tests within minutes, including detecting whether the chest pain is a stroke or a gas problem.

With this, Goa becomes the first State in the country to use the state-of-the-art machine in public health sector. The machines, which were used on a pilot study, received tremendous response from doctors of the cardiac department at GMC and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said they intend to place it in ambulances and critical areas like casualty and ICUs.

“These machines will help in a big way. It is something very innovative and state-of-the-art machine. This had added to our strength and mission of saving lives,” he said at a press briefing after entering into an MoU with Colorcon.

The government has partnered with Colorcon that will procure the machines, each of which costs around Rs 5.50 lakh and sponsor to GMC. Separate cost of the cartridges is also borne by the pharmaceutical company, he said.

“It is an activity of Colorcon under CSR. They will provide cartridges as per

our requirement. They are supporting us in our endeavour. Colorcon will take a review on the performance of the machines performed, what is the requirement for the health service and department of health, and continue to help and upgrade the I-STATS machines,” Rane said.

The Abbott representative said, “It is a critical point of care machine. It can even detect the type of chest pain whether it is stroke or just gas problem. The result will be in two minutes. You can even print and transfer the results through WiFi, and this machine can keep 1,000 results at a time,” he said.
