PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday stated that exams will be re-introduced for Class VIII students in the next six months to access their levels as the quality of education has been a major concern due to the No Detention Policy (NDP).

“We will re-introduce exams for VIII standard students. Students will have to pass the exams to go to the next standard. The provision for automatic promotion of students till Class VIII will be rectified partially to bring back the performance-based promotions at Class VIII,” Parrikar said.

“This special examination shall be conducted in the next six months to access the level of the students but we will not fail them, we shall put them for remedial classes. Most importantly this exam will help Education Department access the level of teachers,” Parrikar added.

Speaking of permissions to set up new primary schools, Parrikar said, “There is no need of opening new primary schools in Goa as the current ratio of 23 students is better than the international norm of 25 students per teacher. The government is paying one teacher for every 23 students.”
