MARGAO: For the first time the Margao Municipal Council met organizers of the various Sarvajanik Ganesh festivals and chalked out a plan to maintain cleanliness and tackle the huge volumes of garbage that is generated during the celebrations that last for upto 11 days at some places.

While the council has offered to lift the garbage generated by even deploying trucks at specific times, the organisers have been asked to appoint volunteers who will guide the devotees and visitors to dispose their garbage properly so that the council can get dry and wet waste segregated.

“We have offered to provide them with dustbins besides “Swach Bharat” posters; the organizers have been requested to appoint volunteers who will guide the people where to dump the wet and dry garbage so that we can get segregated waste,” said MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai.

Pointing out that there is a substantial amount of wet garbage in the form of waste food and also flowers generated during the Ganesh celebrations, she said that putting this in plastic has been the major problem and they propose to avoid that this year.

“We have agreed to send vehicles to collect their food leftovers at 4 pm and 11 pm after people have left the pandals after consuming their meals,” she said.
