Now, road at Sao Tome caves in, truck laden with tar is the victim

Woman falls into a pit at Fontainhas, hospitalised for injuries; exposes lack of safety precautions while undertaking Smart City works

PANJIM: An elderly woman sustained grievous injuries after she fell into a pit dug as part of Smart City works near Rua De Natal in Fontainhas. The incident happened on Saturday morning, when the woman fell into the pit and had to be hospitalised as she suffered two fractures on her leg and had head injuries too.

Onlookers hit out at the Smart City contractors for neglecting safety precautions while hurriedly taking up Smart City works in the capital city.

 “The incident has exposed the sheer callous attitude of the contractors, who give a damn to the safety of commuters,” charged locals. 

The pit was dug up as part of sewerage network work under the Smart City Mission. Locals informed that after completing the work, the pit was left open because of which the woman and another young boy had fallen victims here. 

Meanwhile, yet another truck laden with hot-mix tar fell into the ditch on the Sao Tome road, on Saturday.
