PONDA: The villagers of Querim and Savoi Verem offered floral tributes at Nilesh Naik Memorial, BhutKhamb Querim Plateau, who was martyred in Nylon 6,6 agitation 26 years ago.

It is now 26 years the villagers have not forgotten the sacrifice of Naik and offer tributes to his memorial every year.

The Villagers at that time had launched massive agitation against the Nylon 6,6 project citing it is pollution oriented project and would harm the water resources, bagayats plantations etc.

Thinking that the State government may put this land for any other use, the villagers have put fourth their demand to construct a hall or Ravindra Bhavan in memory of late Naik, which will be useful also to the surrounding panchayats such as Verem Vagurme, Volvoi and Querim.

A local, Dinesh Naik requested the State government that there is vast land at plateau and some of it should be used for construction of hall so that his name remains in history.

He said, “The villagers remember Naik every year but no representative from the government visit the memorial. On the backdrop of agitation by Melaulim locals to save their land, the people at Savoi Verem and Querim are emotional to the sacrifice of late Naik during Nylon 6,6 agitation.

It may be recalled on January 23, 1995 during Nylon 6,6 agitation there were clashes between locals and police at Bhutkhamb Plateau and Naik martyred in the incident. Following this the project was scrapped.

Mahesh Naik (brother of martyr Nilesh Naik), Suryakant Naik, Sandesh Verenkar, Audut Naik, Nilesh Naik, Surendra Naik, Lavu Naik, Dinesh Naik and Sham Kolekar offered floral tributes to late Naik on his 26th death anniversary.
