VASCO: The blockade by Verna villagers on NH17 which is one of the busiest stretches connecting Panjim to Margao threw life out of gear for hundreds of commuters on Thursday.

Most commuters, including office-goers and students were seen left stranded after they missed their respective deadlines to reach their destinations.

Many commuters even had to walk a few kilometers in a bid to seek an alternate mode of transport as all public transport plying on Margao-Panjim and vice-versa route was "grounded".

“We had to walk from Verna bypass road till Pirni in Verna as the bus in which we were travelling to Panjim got stranded in the blockade by people. Unfortunately, no transport was available even at Pirni junction and thus we had to walk till Titan junction to find bus for Panjim,” a student Sandeep Naik said. Another journalism student said, "I had my final exams today and I am pretty sure that I will miss it as I am stranded and my bus hasn't moved an inch. I ackknowledge the protesters' reasons, but why harass the common man who has no involvement in their plight. I wonder if I would get a chance to re-appear for my exams."

The situation was almost same for all commuters who got stranded in the blockade. Though the Verna police along with Vasco traffic cell managed to divert the traffic though Verna church road, however as this road is narrow, it failed to take load of the traffic. Vehicles were seen stranded for a stretch of over two km from Titan junction to Nuven leaving commuters to endure hardships. Several long distance buses got stranded for over two hours. Several commuters who had no other option but to wait for the blocakde to be lifted were seen sweating it out in the grimy and heatwave conditions.
