MARGAO: Expressing frustration over the release of sewage into the open nullah at Old Market, Margao, citizens have demanded immediate measures to stop the contamination of the bustling locality. Speaking to reporters, Margao local Milagres Fernandes said that the open nullah also poses danger to pedestrians and commuters.

He pointed out that the nullah, located just opposite the South Goa District Court, needs urgent attention from the Public Works Department as it has created major health hazards and posed a danger to road-users.

“Sewage can be seen flowing and accumulated inside the nullah for the last several years. This open nullah has proven dangerous to commuters as it is located just at the roadside. The stench here is unbearable; it is a major health hazard,” said Fernandes.

While appreciating the government’s efforts in carrying out repair works of the footpath, he also demanded urgent attention from government authorities towards the open and polluted nullah.

He pointed out that the PWD is often found releasing sewage into the nullah located on the other side of the road after it has been pulled out from choked sewage chambers.

“It is very shocking to notice that government authorities are engaged in pollution by releasing sewage from the chambers into the open nullah, heading towards River Sal,” said Fernandes.
