MARGAO: Leaders of the Congress Party, Nationalist Congress Party and Goa Forward Party held a meeting at Margao to discuss strategy for the March 20 municipal elections.

Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat, GFP president and MLA Vijai Sardesai, NCP State president Jose Philip D’Souza and Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao (NCP) were part of the meeting where they resolved to unite to defeat candidates supported by th eBJP.

Though the opposition parties are awaiting the High Court verdict on the delimitation and reservation of municipal wards, the leaders held a closed-door meeting in a hotel at Margao.

It is learnt that the Congress leaders had authorised Kamat to hold parleys with like-minded parties in Goa so that they field candidates by consensus and ensure the defeat of BJP-backed nominees.

After the meeting, Kamat said that they discussed a pre-poll alliance for all 11 municipal councils even as they were awaiting the court verdict. He said that he had informed his party Central leadership, who later asked the local leaders to hold talks with other political party leaders to form a strong panel to defeat the panels backed by the BJP. Sardesai said that the people are waiting for the verdict of the High Court and things to clarify. He said that across the board the political parties feel that the opposition has to unite, take the lead and support the ones who are opposing the BJP.D’Souza said that he was in touch with his high command and they want anti-BJP forces to be united.

On Friday, the BJP officially declared its panel named ‘Vibrant Margao’ for 25 seats of Margao municipal council.
