PANJIM: Goa is set to receive more rain from Saturday as a result of the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the south-east coast. An Orange colour alert has been issued for the State till September 22.

This was revealed by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory in a bulletin that also said, “A low pressure area is likely to develop over Northeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood around September 20.”

IMD maintained that the developing weather systems are likely to strengthen the monsoon over Goa and enhance rainfall activity. The Observatory has predicted very heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5 cm in 24 hours till September 21 while heavy rains to continue till September 22. Wind speeds of 30-40 kmph are very likely during the period.

As reported earlier, the monsoon rains are likely to enjoy an extended period this year as the four-month long weather phenomenon is set for a late withdrawal.

The monsoons have been very active over Goa for the season with 31 per cent surplus rains, compared to the rest of India, till date.

So far the month of September reported weak rainfall activities with only 11.7 inches of rains till Friday. The State’s total seasonal rainfall till date has been 147.6 inches as against its average trend of 112.9 inches for the period.
