Panchayat polls likely to be delayed beyond June: Godinho

Team Herald

PANJIM: Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho has said that the general panchayat elections in the State will be further delayed due to recent directives by the Supreme Court.

According to Godinho, the Supreme Court by an order on May 10 has asked the States to reserve wards for candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes communities based on new guidelines. In view of this development, panchayat elections will be delayed beyond June.

“Recently what has impacted reservation is the Supreme Court decision which has stated that the State OBC Commission has to have a say in formulating as to how many OBC candidates on actual OBC population present in that particular ward or area. If such an exercise is not held then the ward has to be notified as General ward. Since it has come to our knowledge, I will place all these facts before the Chief Minister as well as before the Cabinet and take a decision,” he said.

Godinho said that by Monday, May 16, he will be able to give a clear picture.
