Traffic signals on NH17 causing confusion?

BASURI DESAI

The electronic traffic signal installed at the St Cruz-Merces junction on the NH17 is welcome but the confusion it creates is not.

The Goa Traffic Police Cell has taken this step because many accidents used to take place at this junction.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle has also inspected the traffic signal few days back along with the locals.

Andrea Pereira, a local activist, has raised the issue and had called the traffic cell of Goa Police. She has said that there is every possibility of accidents at the junction despite the signal being in place.

“We appreciate the police who have installed the much needed electronic traffic signal at the junction which is a connecting point of both St Cruz and Merces villages but there is a need to change and add some commands”, Pereira said.

The confusion takes place as there are no right and left signals for commuters travelling on NH17 to enter the villages. In this situation the confused commuter often halts in the middle of the highway creating chaos and inviting a blare of horns.

Naresh Salgaonkar, another local resident, urged with the traffic cell to make necessary changes if possible with the signal to avoid untoward incidents.

DySP Angle said the traffic signal is installed after considering all the aspects and informed that the modification in the signal is not feasible as demanded by the locals.

“Considering the traffic flow on the highway it is not possible to stop the traffic just for the few vehicles which are taking diversion at the junction. We have kept sufficient space in between the junction that can be used by the commuters who are taking diversion in the villages,” he said.
