Husband from Vasco a councillor since last year; Become first Goan couple to be elected to any Borough
PANJIM: As Goa’s Capital gears up to elect a new MLA later this month, a young lady, Adorabelle Shaikh from Panjim has been elected to Swindon Borough Council from the Central ward, in the United Kingdom.
Adorabelle’s victory earlier this month, makes her and husband Imtiyaz Shaikh the first Goan couple to be elected to Borough Councils. Imtiyaz, who hails from Vasco, was elected to the same council from the Eastcott ward in May 2018.
In the elections held on May 2, Adorabelle received two-thirds of the total votes polled. She got 2,454 votes while her three opponents together received 1,162 votes. The husband–wife duo represents the Labour party in the Council.
Hailing from Panjim, Adorabelle who earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce specialising in Business Management from the SS Dempo College of
Commerce and Economics at Altinho has been living in the UK for nearly 15 years. She has been working for the last 13 years with Zurich Financial Services, a finance insurer, in the corporate risk department.
Speaking to Herald, Adorabelle stated that the Labour Party’s manifesto has always resonated with their core beliefs of fairness and equality, ethical growth and development. She said, “We want to see more youth coming forward with fresh ideas and in raising the profile of our Goan community. We are always trying to find ways to motivate youth and others from the Goan community to come forward in making a difference.”
Responding to a question on her plans for the ward, she said, “I will continue to work with the council, local councillors and parish councillors for a better central ward. Much is needed to be done in areas surrounding children’s centres, the safety of the community, and local business, and I endeavour to continue being a dedicated ward councillor to the voters.”
Married for 10 years, Imtiyaz and Adorabelle have two children aged 8 and 5 years, who are actively involved in their parents’ campaigns.
The term for a Borough Councillor is three years and every ward has three councillors, one elected every year. After completion of three years term, the councillor can seek re-election. British Nationals, European Union citizens and citizens of the Commonwealth registered on the electoral register are eligible to vote in local elections.
