PANJIM: The Panjim police successfully apprehended Nabokumar Mahal, the prime accused involved in the misappropriation of high-value liquor bottles. The case was brought to light following a complaint lodged by Carlos Barreto, Partner of Casa Barreto Wine Stores, located in Panjim.

As per the complaint filed on February 28 last year, Nabokumar Mahal, a native of West Bengal and an employee of Barreto, was accused of pilfering Black Label, Red Label, and Jagermeister bottles from Casa Barreto Wine Stores between October 2022 and February 9, 2023. His modus operandi allegedly involved swapping these premium bottles with boxes containing lower-value brands such as Royal Challenge, Royal Stag, and McDowell’s.

Additionally, two other individuals, Chitta Jena, an employee at Barrel House Wine Store situated opposite Kamat Estate, St Inez, and Surabh Narulkar, the owner of Barrel House Wine Store, were implicated for knowingly purchasing the substituted boxes, fully aware of the higher-priced bottles they contained. This collaboration resulted in a substantial financial loss of Rs 40 lakh to Carlos Barreto, according to the complaint.

Panjim police registered an offence invoking Sections 406, 408, and 420 of the IPC, read with Section 34. Chitta Jena, Surabh Narulkar, and Nabokumar Mahal were named as the accused in the case. While Chitta Jena and Surabh Narulkar were initially arrested and subsequently released, Nabokumar Mahal had been on the run since the commission of the crime. However, through meticulous planning and intelligence gathering, the Panjim Town police team apprehended Nabokumar Mahal in West Bengal.Team Herald
