After the Carnival, another colourful extravaganza, the Shigmo float parade is set to dazzle thousands in the Panjim city on March 10. Like the carnival, the local authorities have shifted the traditional route of Shigmo float parade as well to Miramar-Caranzalem stretch. However this has not deterred people from making plans to participate in the annual event popular wherein traditional folk dances and enactment of mythological scenes are the main highlights.
“Change of venue will not deter us from enjoying the event. In fact it is a good move as traffic will be at ease in the main city and the floats will have enough space due to wider roads along the Miramar-Dona Paula road stretch,” said an enthusiast of the two annual events Anita Das.
She was backed by another Panjimite Aruna Shirodkar stating the shifting of the venue was the need of the hour. “The traditional route was short of sufficient road width and moreover, for huge floats tree branches and overhead lines were created obstruction. I am hopeful the new route will take care of all these problems, and it would be a smooth sail for participants of the float parade and the spectators,” she added.
The city is already in Shigmo mood with decorations and sculptures installed across different locations. On March 10, the float parade will commence from Goa Science Centre, Miramar to Harley Davidson Showroom, Caranzalem. Before the commencement of the parade at around 4pm, the floats will be lined up on the Dr Jack Sequeira Road from Miramar Circle to Science Centre.
The vehicular traffic will be barred on the parade route from 2pm till the procession is over. The Traffic Department has already begun spreading awareness on the traffic diversion, parking and no parking zones for that day.
