Temporary road plan in place for Cujira educational hub

Followed by Herald’s story on the traffic congestion at Cujira educational hub during peak hours, the traffic department has planned a temporary as well as a permanent way out for vehicular traffic from the educational institutes.

City based Dr K B Hedgeswar School, Dhempe Higher Secondary School of Arts and Science and Dempo HSS of Commerce have already been shifted to the new campus at Cujira a month back. Meanwhile, an additional three institutes – Mustifund Saunsthan, Rosary High School and Anjuman Nurul Islam High School, are lined up to be relocated by the year-end.

After studying the traffic congestion at Cujira for almost a month, the traffic cell has decided to extend the already existing road which leads to the educational hub and stretch it along the Athletic stadium, thus coming out from the parallel side of the entrance, towards NH 17. However, at the point of the exit, the department wants to construct a circle near the curve, which goes towards the army camp entrance for smooth flow of traffic and to reduce the risk of accidents.

Speaking to Herald, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic Cell, Dharmesh Angle revealed, “We have carried out a number of inspections at the site to understand the flow of traffic and after discussing the matter, we are planning to extend the road from behind the stadium stretching towards the right side of the stadium and coming out again at NH 17 from the parallel side of the entrance.” Meanwhile, briefing about the hurdle to go ahead with the plan, Angle said, “The area from which we are planning to construct the exit road belongs to a second party. So therefore, first we have to acquire the land and then go ahead with the plan. It will take some to time to execute the plan.”

Besides vehicular traffic, commuters from the schools who travel via bus also have to face hardships due to the absence of a bus shelter to board buses going towards the south. The educational hub of Cujira is neighboured by the medical centre of Goa, consisting of Goa’s chief medical hospital and only medical college. Herald reported on the subject a few weeks ago, where the construction of the driveway had resulted in the bus shelter being demolished leaving commuters on the road to fend for themselves when boarding public buses and hence risking their lives in the process.

To ease the chaos and widen the road, the traffic cell resolved to remove the thin divider and widen the road. Simultaneously, commuters will be provided with a proper shelter to board buses. “We are in the process of widening the road opposite Goa Dental College, next to the driveway which is under construction. We will remove the divider and shift the commuters a little ahead with a proper shelter. This is just a temporary solution which is taken on priority, followed by which the construction of road and circle will be implemented,” said Angle.
