SANQUELIM: The opposition to the government’s decision to merge primary schools has now started to receive flack from Sanquelim too.

The parents and Marathi enthusiasts expressed displeasure over the merging proposal of the oldest government primary school, which is located at Gokulwadi, Sanquelim.

The school currently has only 10 students and so the officials took a meeting with the parents and teachers to inform them of the decision.

A rule which says there should not be another school within three km of distance was broken by the government itself as the authorities gave permission for private schools to be opened nearby.

The building in which this primary school is located also houses a government higher secondary.

The parents have highlighted the fact that the building is well-equipped with the facilities and so, the primary school should not be moved to another school.

"The decision will have ill effects in the long run. The closer the school to their houses, the safer the students feel. The primary students are too young to adjust to a new environment quickly. The government should reconsider their decision as it will affect the students on both mental as well as physical levels,” Prof Sadanand Mallik said.
