Patient being treated at GMC tests negative for Nipah

PANJIM: The 20-year-old patient from Kerala, suspected to be suffering from Nipah, has tested negative for the virus.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the blood samples of the patient which were sent for testing at Pune-based laboratory have come negative. “The patient is negative for Nipah by molecular and serological methods,” the minister said.

The passenger who was passing through Goa by train and heading to Uttar Pradesh had fallen unconscious at Tivim Railway Station, and was admitted to GMC on Monday. He was kept in isolation and was undergoing treatment under the supervision of three doctors.

The patient has been treated as a case of viral encephalitis.  The identity of the patient has not been revealed.  The virus has claimed several lives in Kerala.
