The panicked liquor traders are looking towards the Manohar Parrikar-led coalition government for its decision whether or not it would challenge the Supreme Court (SC) order directing ban on the sale of alcohol within 500 mtrs radius of highways. Close to 3127 retail-wholesale liquor shops and bars, identified at around 2,775 premises on the national and State highways have the sword hanging over its heads considering that Excise Department will not renew their licences from April 1, 2017. The Department will issue show-cause notices latest by Monday.

While the liquor shops are certain to face closure subject to either the State or stakeholders moving the SC against the order, argument whether bars are exempted from the ambit of SC ban continues. Attorney General Mukul Rohatagi had recently clarified that bars & restaurants are exempted from highway liquor ban.
