Sirs, we do have a problem, say GU students

The purpose for which GU exists, the satisfaction of their students, hasn’t quite been achieved. VRISHANK MAHATME taps into what isn’t quite ticking on the campus

While the Goa University (GU) is making all efforts to troubleshoot its issues like faculty recruitment, the students have expressed their utter dissatisfaction on the manner in which the administration is functioning.

During a brief chat with Herald, the students have complained of the lethargic attitude of the staff, which they termed is a ‘major problem.’

“The administration process at the Goa University is very slow. If any student has queries for the administration section, they have to follow it up regularly until they receive complete details on their query. Another major issue is that majority of the times there are water problems in the main library building,” said Radhika Sharma, a student pursuing MBA from the GU.

Further a majority of students also complained that GU administration takes almost a month to rectify and print new mark sheets if any mistake is reported.

Another student from GU, Vibhav Wagle had this to say “It took me at least a month to get my name corrected on the mark sheet that too because I was regularly following it up with the authorities. The administration process at GU is very slow. Further the process of declaring results is also very slow and most of the time electives are not finished on time.”

Meanwhile, a group of students have also claimed there are Internet problems, lack of infrastructure; tardiness in results process, random faculties taking any subjects which they have to major in leading to lack of knowledge passed down to the student, etc.

However, another student who wished not to be named, said that inter college events are assumed to be a waste of time with no support from the management.

Speaking to Herald, National Students Union of India (NSUI), President, Ahraz Mulla said “Now that we have come to know about these problems from the students at GU, we will not be hesitating to send a memorandum and if need arises, even a protest. As the government has new faces, we will also be meeting the Education Minister to sort out these issues.”

Linking all the incidents that have taken place in the past, female students have also pointed out security issues as the GU campus is not protected by a concrete wall.

“I think it’s high time now that the GU authorities in collaboration with the government plan out proper safety arrangements. The major thing that needs to be done on priority is the compound wall, with security guards as a result of which outsiders will not be allowed to enter in the campus,” said a student who did not want to reveal her identity.

When asked if a proposal or idea of compound wall has been pitched with the government, GU Registrar Y V Reddy had earlier told Herald that, “We will put a proposal in front of this new government and we hope that we shall be able to complete the compound wall.”
