PANJIM: Three months after the State reduced tax on petrol and diesel on the Centre’s directions, the State government has hiked VAT on petrol by 2 per cent (from 13 to 15%).

After the hike, petrol prices in Goa would cost Rs 1.12 more rising to Rs 63.99. Earlier petrol cost was Rs 62.87 a litre. Despite hike in prices, petrol in Goa will be cheaper than in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The government has also marginally hiked VAT on aviation turbo fuel and high speed diesel.

The Centre on October 4 had announced a cut of Rs 2.50 per litre on petrol and diesel prices and asked States to reduce tax on fuel by another Rs 2.50 per litre and Goa had immediately adhered to the directions.

Since crude prices were at a low and diesel prices in Goa were higher than petrol prices, the State decided to hike VAT, sources said.
