Panjim: Police on Monday detained the National Students Union of India (NSUI) members who were protesting at Azad Maidan seeking postponement of upcoming Goa Board examination of class X and Class XII.

NSUI members, who were on peaceful protest, were detained by Panjim police for violating lockdown orders including Section 144 of CrPc. This action has been strongly condemned by Goa Congress Chief Girish Chodankar, while other members questioned how section 144 was applied when only three members were on a hunger strike.

Earlier, while speaking to the media, NSUI expressed apprehension about the stress level of each student in the present scenario. They also raised concerns about possible community transmission amongst students.

“In the last couple of days, the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing. There is possibility of community transmission, if even one student has the symptoms. Therefore, as a precaution the exams should be postponed,” said NSUI Goa President Ahraz Mulla, while calling for cancelling the exams.

A NSUI member, whose sister is set to answer the exams added, "Students are not mentally prepared to answer the examination amidst the coronavirus scare. Even parents are worried to send their kids for the examination".

NSUI members demanded that the examination be postponed till the time, Goa becomes a Green Zone or the number of active cases decline.
