Police suggest CCTV cameras for GEC campus

PONDA: The Ponda police called on the Goa Engineering College (GEC) officials to discuss the issue of security at GEC campus. The meeting was held at Ponda DySP’s office. The police have asked the officials to initiate the process to install CCTV cameras at the entrance of GEC campus. It may be recalled that on June 6, an NIT student was mercilessly beaten up by youth from Ponda.  

During the meet, it was decided to close GEC’s main entrance gate from 8 pm to 7 am. DySP Ashish Shirodkar, Police Inspector Tushar Lotlikar, GEC Principal Dr Kripa Shankar and officials from NIT, IIT and ITI were also present.

On June 6, at 9.30 pm, six youth from Ponda had beaten up an NIT student after robbing him of Rs 1,200. Police had arrested four of the accused, while two other juveniles were sent to Apna Ghar. The non-Goan students residing in the campus had expressed fear as youth from the locality frequently visited the campus and consumed liquor. Around 3,000 students are studying in GEC campus. The police had called the meeting as a confidence building measure and to eradicated fear among the students.

DySP Shirodkar informed that, youth from Ponda and surrounding localities often came to GEC campus at night time to drink liquor.
