PANJIM: A Panjim police team has left for Chandigarh to unearth further leads in the fake currency notes seizure that saw the arrest of five men from the union territory on Monday.

Goa Police are tracking the source of the approximate Rs 2.96 lakh counterfeit notes found in possession of the accused, who had arrived in Goa with their families for a ‘holiday’ over a week ago.

The investigation team is travelling by road and is expected to reach Chandigarh by Thursday evening. “We will take assistance of our police counterparts in Chandigarh. If we find a link in any State or UT, we will not hesitate to seek assistance of the respective police stations. We are tracking the source of the fake currency, as such, it would not be appropriate to divulge details in the present stage of the investigation,” a police source told Herald.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to arrive in Goa to probe the case as the local police has informed the former about the seizure and arrests. The five accused are currently undergoing eight days of custodial interrogation.
