Threaten to move High Court or NGT for justice

PANJIM: Over 400 villagers of Pomburpa-Olaulim have raised their voice against alleged illegal conversion of 11,282 sq mts in their area.

The villagers have submitted a petition, signed by 400 people, to the Chief Town Planner Rajesh Naik urging the department to withdraw its consent granted to the alleged conversion claiming that the move is not in public interest but in private interest.

The locals have pointed out that as per the information published in the Herald on March 3, the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Board has cleared an application for conversion of 11,282 sq mts of orchard land into settlement.

The plots in question are Survey Number 42/2-A owned by Ehrlich de Sa with an area of 7,217 sq mts and Survey number 42/2-B owned by Antonio Silva Rosa with areas of 4.065 sq mts, the petition stated.

Speaking to media persons, a villager Vinay Chopdekar said the area, which is proposed for conversion, is partially orchard, khazan and also falls under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). “The conversion of such a huge plot will change the entire demography of our village. Also, the ecology and biodiversity will be affected,” he said.

Stating that the village has always attracted local tourism, Chopdekar said with mega projects coming up, tourism will be affected as the small springs will dry out.  “We the villagers are united and strongly oppose this illegal land conversion,” he said.

The villagers have threatened to approach either High Court or the National Green Tribunal seeking justice, if the town and country planning department fails to act.

When asked whether Chief Town Planner has given any assurance, Chopdekar said that he has assured to seek a report from the concerned departments and will decide accordingly.
