VASCO: The Electricity Department engineers have asked the Mormugao Municipal Council to remove the heaps of garbage scattered around transformers at different locations in the port town and to maintain cleanliness.

According to the assistant engineer Sanjeev Mhalshekar, due to dumping of garbage near the transformers often the department staff and linesmen were finding difficult to attend emergencies like fuse calls and undertaking regular maintenance works. He said that the department in the past had written to the Mormugao municipality asking them maintain cleanliness around the transformers erected in the town.

Mhalshekar said that at many places where transformers have been put up, garbage has been dumped around it and often people have been found urinating near it making it practically difficult for the staff to attend any emergency or whenever there is power failure due to foul smell.

Mhalshekar recalled that has been incident of transformer box getting burnt in the Vasco municipal market due for dumping empty wooden boxes and packaging cartons near the transformer box, which accidentally caught fire. He appealed to the locals not to throw dry garbage near the transformers as it could prove dangerous.

The assistant engineer hoped that the MMC would take steps to remove garbage on daily basis and maintain the area around transformers clean.
