Present and former MLAs’ supporters clash over credit row on creek cleaning issue

MARGAO: The work of cleaning much-discussed polluted Colva creak has already begun by the Water Resources Department (WRD) following strict directions from High Court with assistance from Tourism Department and Colva village Panchayat. The current Benaulim MLA should not involved in taking the credit for the same, said Warren Alemao on behalf of former MLA Churchill Alemao on Monday. There was again a clash between the supporters of present and former MLAs of Benaulim constituency over the issue of Colva creek.

Two days ago AAP MLA Venzy Viegas visited the site and informed that the de-silting and cleaning of the Colva creek will begin from May 15. However, now Churchill supporters have claimed that this issue was addressed by the MLA in 2017 before the then Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar.

"Churchill had even alerted the Chief Minister that the Colva creek is getting polluted,” said Warren.

He further said that de-silting and cleaning of Colva creek solves only one part of the problem.

"We need to make sure the nearby hotels and restaurants do not dump their sewage and pollute the creek again. The High Court of Bombay at Goa had pulled up the Colva Panchayat for not acting on the directions of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to stop hotels from dumping sewage into the creek near the Colva beach,” he said.

"The Social Media MLA is once again taking credit for a matter which he does not deserve. Requesting the social media MLA of Benaulim Constituency to follow up and to make sure that no hotels and restaurants dump their sewage into the creek", urged Warren.

It is pertinent to note that last week the supporters of both the MLAs had a verbal clash over the issue of hot-mixing of Colva roads.
