President Kovind to launch 60th Liberation Day celebrations

PANJIM: President Ram Nath Kovind will be the chief guest on December 19, for the launch of the year-long celebrations of 60 years of the Liberation of Goa.

The inaugural program will be held at Panjim Gymkhana, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday.

The first meeting of the State Level Organising Committee, comprising ruling and opposition MLAs, freedom fighters, government officials, social groups was held on Friday. 

Addressing the media the chief minister said the programmes will be held from December 19, 2020 to December 19, 2021 and will focus on showcasing the culture, history and traditions of the State. 

Asked about the opposition to the spending of Rs 100 cr on the celebrations, the CM said that there was no opposition as such at the meeting. “The opposition leaders were happy with the kind of programmes planned,” he said.

Opposition leader Digambar Kamat, Pratapsingh Rane and former Dy Chief Minister Sudin Dhavalikar were present for the meeting. 

Sawant said that the opposition leaders also gave their valuable suggestions. Goa Forward Party did not attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, Goa Foward Party President Vijai Sardesai in a twitter said, "On this Liberation Day, #Goemkars will remember the recklessness and insensitivity of the @DrPramodPSawant #government that chooses to celebrate while numerous of #Goans continue to struggle financially, medically and socially during these #challenging times".
