SIOLIM: This season's first Mankurad mangoes have arrived in the main markets and as expected the prices are way beyond the reach of the common man.

Oxel-Siolim based trader Samir Dhargalkar has maintained the yearly tradition of being the first one to introduce Mankurad mangoes in the Goan market. Priced between Rs 400 and 600 each, the fruit is beyond the reach of the aam admi.

“The usual mango season begins from April and lasts till around June. If the weather remains ideal, then mangoes can be harvested in March.  This year, a few mangoes have been harvested in January itself,” said Dhargalkar. Champa, a vendor in the Mapusa market said that the rate of Mankurad in the market is costly and has few takers. “Customers don’t buy in dozens as the price is high but pick a few since it’s a delicacy. Presently, the supply is less and hence the price is high,” she added.
