MARGAO: Raia Parish Priest Fr Conceicao D’Silva has tendered his unconditional apology to South Goa Collector for his “hate speech” against which a complaint was lodged with the Collector.

Accepting the unconditional apology, the collector has strictly warned the priest to refrain from repeating such acts and confine himself to his priestly duties.

It may be recalled that during his sermon, Fr Conceicao allegedly berated the Bharatiya Janata Party and its leaders and made some claims that had gone viral and the BJP had officially complained against it.

In the order issued on Tuesday, the Collector said Additional Collector Agnelo Fernandes had investigated the complaint and noted that the priest had admitted having made the statements and regretted making that speech and tendered an unconditional apology.

Advising Fr Conceicao not to repeat such acts in future, the Collector has also advised the priest “to confine himself to priestly duties as per customs and traditions,” failing which strict action would be taken as per law.

The code of conduct that came into force on March 10 and will continue till May 27 has laid down guidelines for political parties, candidates and even members of the public so that the election process be conducted in a free and fair manner.

The guidelines clearly state that mosques, churches, temples or other places of worship should not be used for election propaganda and further that no person shall indulge in any activity that may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic groups.
