PONDA: Significant progress has been made on the ongoing project at Opa Water Works, promising to greatly enhance water supply to Panjim, the heart of the Smart City initiative.
Officials at the Opa Treatment Plant reported that while the construction of intake wells in the river has been successfully completed, approximately 60% of the entire project has been finished.
The primary objective of the project is to augment water supply to the state capital by an additional 40 million liters per day (MLD), supplementing the existing capacity of 80 MLD.
Bakhiya Construction, a company based in South India, has been entrusted with the project and has recently finished constructing the intake wells. Positioned along the riverbank, these wells serve to collect water, which is then pumped to the treatment plant for further processing.
According to an engineer at Opa Water Works, the contractor has completed four out of the seven planned works. The comprehensive project encompasses the construction of a Panel Control Room, a SCADA Room, a 300 cubic meter (CuM) ground-level reservoir (GLR), a workshop, two master balancing reservoirs (MBRs) with capacities of 2500 liters each at Curti hill, an additional pump house, and a 1500 CuM sump.
The Opa Water Works facility houses five distinct water treatment plants, ranging from 8 MLD to 54 MLD capacity, collectively supplying 152 MLD of water to Ponda and Tiswadi talukas.
