PANJIM:  The State government has proposed to set up State Cancer Institute by upgrading the Tertiary Cancer Care Centre, considered to be the biggest in the Konkan region, the foundation for which was laid earlier this month. 

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday called on Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan in New Delhi to discuss various issues pertaining to the State Health Department. 

Following the meeting, Rane tweeted that Bhushan has agreed to State’s request for upgrading Tertiary Cancer Care Centre to State Cancer Institute and accordingly has advised the State to send a proposal along with the referrals from district hospitals. 

Rane said that State will sign a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Union Health Ministry, Government of India Tata Memorial Cancer Institute for mentoring purposes and guidance for the proposed State Cancer Institute of Goa. 

The foundation stone of the 110- bedded Tertiary Cancer Care Centre was laid earlier this month. The Rs 120 crore facilities is expected to be completed within 18 months. 

The hospital is been built adjacent to the Super-Specialty block at Bambolim, through Hospital Service Consultancy Corporation (HSCC).

During the meeting with Union Secretary, Rane also had a discussion on the digitisation of health records in collaboration with C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, India).
