MARGAO: The Town and Country Planning Minister, Vijai Sardesai, assured the people of Colva that the proposed 25-metre road shown in the Regional Plan 2021 next to the Colva church will be removed and only the existing 10 metres road will be shown.
The Parish Priest of Colva, Fr Simpliciano Fernandes, had called for a public meeting on Friday evening in the Colva church hall to raise the issue of the 25-metre proposed road in the Regional Plan which would require the church to be demolished if the road had to be constructed. More than thousand people attended the meeting. Fr Simpliciano stressed on the significance of the Colva Church and stated that it is a heritage and religious structure which was built 400 years ago and therefore it has to be cherished and protected. “If anything happens to the church, we can't keep quiet”, he said. Fr Simpliciano submitted a
memorandum to the TCP minister and the Chief Town Planner to modify the regional plan to protect the church.
While taking credit for getting an assurance from the TCP Minister, Churchill Alemao, stated that Vijai Sardesai has given an assurance that on August 16, the issue will be resolved. “I request Vijai Sardesai to keep his word and give a good plan for Goa”, he said.
The Chief Town planner gave a presentation showing the Colva Regional Plan 2021. He showed the proposed road near the church while explaining what changes will be made in the TCP meeting on August 16. Curiously he also showed the zone plan of an area in Sernabatim, Colva for which he has received a proposal to show a road which according to the panchayat exists and was not shown in the Regional Plan.
