VASCO: Around 30 Goan youth who had gathered outside Verna Industrial Estate area to protest the harassment by some pharmaceutical companies by employing outsiders were left disappointed as they were forced to cancel their planned protest rally at the last moment due to the Model Code of Conduct.

The rally, which was planned by Goencho Avaaz (GA) and Aggressive Goans to protest the companies’ injustice towards Goans by employing non-Goans had to be cancelled at last moment as the Verna police along with PI Anil Chodankar armed with guns and lathis arrived at the site and stopped the protesters.

The govt officers informed the youth that they cannot be granted permission to hold the rally as model code of conduct is in force.

The protesters requested PI Chodankar to permit them to conduct a peaceful rally to which he denied saying no permission had been granted by the authorities. There was a heated argument between the PI and the protesters and the rally had to be cancelled. However, the memorandum was sent to the private company concerned.

"Our organisation has been given to understand that there has been a lot of injustice meted out to the locals employed in your company with the ulterior motive of clandestinely retrenching them by means of harassment and thereafter facilitate the individuals from outside the state, mostly those related to the non-local staff already holding position in your company,” claimed GA convenor Capt Viriato Fernandes speaking to the media persons. “We have also observed the discrimination made by the management of a pharmaceutical company at Verna against our local workforce in a very systematic and opaque manner and favoring employment of outside workforce on regular basis. Few months ago, several newspapers highlighted the shocking news of advertisements by a company for interviewing/recruiting individuals from outside of Goa in your factories at Goa," he said. They wish to advise these companies that such attempts of sidelining locals and preferring non-Goans over our people will not be tolerated in any manner and all attempts to retrench the locals and stop their recruitment will be dealt with in a fitting manner by the people of Goa, he warned. The resources of our state viz. land, water, electricity, etc. doled out to corporate, like these companies and others functioning across Goa, along with tax concessions and other benefits are not just for generating profits for themselves but to ensure job creation and uplift of the locals too, he alleged. Zarina da Cunha said the police should have allowed the youth to hold a peaceful protest rally from Titan bus stop to Cipla Circle and claimed that it is very sad that the police force, which is supposed to protect the people are pitted against the locals.
