Raia P’yat urges authorities to reinstall speed breakers on Margao-Ponda Highway

MARGAO: Expressing deep concern over the rising number of accidents, the Raia village panchayat has urgently appealed to

the Public Works Department (PWD), Traffic Cell-Margao, and other relevant authorities to reinstall speed breakers on the

State highway from Margao to Ponda.

In a letter to the PWD, the panchayat has called for prompt action to address safety concerns. The absence of speed breakers on this stretch of the State highway has led to an increased risk of accidents and injuries.

A joint proposal submitted by Raia residents Francisco Fernandes and Martin Rodrigues highlighted the heightened dangers faced by villagers and commuters due to the removal of speed breakers in preparation for the National Games. Vehicles speed down the stretch, ignoring the speed limit, resulting in a surge in road accidents, with recent incidents leading to injuries and, tragically, the loss of a young life, the letter stated.

The gram sabha members, recognising the urgency of the situation, unanimously passed a resolution urging the PWD to promptly reinstall all the speed breakers that were removed for the National Games. The objective is to enhance road safety and prevent further accidents and casualties.

Despite these appeals, citizens have reported that the concerned authorities are yet to reinstall speed breakers on several roads.
