PANJIM: Goa is likely to receive heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5cm in 24 hours, till August 17 as a result of the formation of a low-pressure area over North West Bay of Bengal.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin said that rainfall activities over Goa are likely to increase from Friday till August 17 due to formation of the low-pressure area. The rainfall is likely to be accompanied by strong winds at a speed of 35-45kmph.

It said there will be strengthening of westerly winds at 1.5kms and 3.1kms above the mean sea level. “There is also strengthening of pressure gradient over Arabian Sea along Konkan coast and likely formation of a weather system called an off shore-trough,” IMD said.

The southwest monsoon has been very active over the State since its onset in June. Since June 1 till date, the State has received 118.20 inches (3002.4mm) of rain, which is 27 per cent over the average of 93.13 inches (2365.7mm).
