MARGAO: The entire stretch of footpath from Rawanfond to ESI Hospital at Margao continues to create major inconvenience to the public due to overgrown bushes, mud, garbage and debris.

However, Dipali Saval, Vice-Chairperson, Margao Municipal Council claimed that the civic body has already commenced the work of cleaning.

Speaking to Herald several locals have expressed anger on the concerned authorities for negligence towards the issue and demanded immediate cleaning of the footpath.

Reportedly, two weeks ago, Herald had highlighted the issue upon the request of the locals. However, no authority has shown any seriousness towards cleaning the footpath.

On Tuesday too, Herald noticed that the footpath that runs along the road stretch is filled with overgrown bushes, mud, garbage and debris, obstructing people's pathways, as a result pedestrians are compelled to walk on the road, making them vulnerable to accidents.

"It is very shocking to note that the authorities are least bothered about the hardships faced by the people. We were expecting that the Margao Municipality should have taken some initiative to clean the footpath, but nothing happened till date,” said Pradeep Naik, a local.

He further said that Margao is a commercial town, and the road leading to Margao Railway Station, it was obvious that the area should have been kept clean.

Earlier Dr Sanjay Desai, a well-known educationalist too had expressed concern over the issue.

He had requested the concerned authorities and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to show some seriousness and clear the footpath at the earliest.

The overgrown bushes, debris, garbage, mud etc is seen unattended by the concerned authorities for the last several years. With no option left pedestrians are seen walking on the roads, despite the existence of the footpath, he said.

Dipali Saval, Vice-Chairperson, MMC said that the civic body is very much serious on the issue and the cleaning of the footpath has commenced.

"Presently, the workers engaged by the Municipality have started the work of cleaning, and the full stretch from ESI Hospital to Railway Rawanfond bridge will be cleaned in the next couple of days,” said Saval.
