MARGAO: Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has reminded Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene and release the seafarers’ welfare pension scheme for retired seafarers and widows. The beneficiaries have to run from pillar to post seeing hope about the scheme.

GSAI reminded the govt that it’s been almost 9 months since the scheme has been stopped.

"Even Ministers, MLAs, NRI Commissioner, Social welfare department have no concrete answer when the pension will be released, the silence of the ruling MLA and ignorance shown by the MLAs specially from seafarers community constituency has added more delay without taking any solution to this issue" said Frank Viegas President of GSAI.

"Due to Covid-19 Pandemic it's unsafe to put the lives of our retired seafarers and widows at risk, given that they are moving out just for enquiries. Most of them are dependent on this scheme for their day to day expenses," Frank added.
